Top 3 Public Cloud Myths Part One: Migration Is Disruptive

It’s a great time to sell public cloud services to businesses. The public cloud market is currently booming. Gartner predicts it will reach $204 billion this year. This is an increase of 16.5 percent from 2015, when it generated $175 billion.

But is it a good idea to enter the public cloud services market? There are many myths among partners claiming the public cloud is disruptive to implement, less secure than private cloud, and difficult to monetize.

In this three part series, we will debunk each of these myths to make sure you are on the same page as your customer when it comes to public cloud. Let’s start with the first most pervasive myth about the public cloud: Migration is Disruptive.

Many business leaders believe that public cloud migration is an all-or-nothing process. In other words, the move requires businesses to transfer all their applications and workflows to the cloud at once. Naturally, this seems like a potentially risky, expensive and complicated process.

The truth, however, is that public cloud migration can happen slowly and methodically. To ensure such a pace ensues, many businesses are choosing to adopt a hybrid approach to cloud computing that involves a combination of public, private and legacy infrastructure. A hybrid strategy enables a pragmatic approach to migration while still allowing businesses to benefit from cloud architecture. In this type of setup, for instance, an application may run on a public or private cloud network, and it can pull information from an in-house database.

A managed cloud provider can help partners further simplify migrations by helping them to strategically move workloads in and out of the large hyperscale cloud environments, to maximize efficiencies and control costs. These type of vendors can provide critical services to help oversee daily cloud workflow management. A company like Rackspace, for instance, can help businesses scale their cloud workloads as needed.

So tell your customers not to fear the process of migrating to the public cloud. Reinforce the fact that the cloud was created to simplify business operations—not complicate them.  Leverage the expertise of your master agent or distributor, like AVANT, to come up with a migration strategy that takes a hybrid cloud approach so your customers can start to realize the benefits without the disruption to their business.
